The term “edify” means to instruct or improve someone’s mind, character, or knowledge, particularly in moral or religious contexts. It can also imply uplifting or enlightening someone. It is an evolution of the Latin verb aedificare, originally meaning “to build a house.”

Aedificare, in turn, is based on aedes, the Latin word for “temple.” We are that house, not a stage for performers, but a temple under construction – where every prayer, song, tear, and testimony is a living stone laid by the Holy Spirit.
